Welcome to Turtle
Butte Lodge!
Turtle Butte Lodge
occupies one of the most historic buildings in the City of Springview, Keya Paha County
and North Central Nebraska. Built in 1914 by one of the original pioneers of the country,
Andrew Carr, and his sons, the lodge is one of the last surviving examples of the
architecture unique to this time period. Originally known as the Roberts Hotel, the
building has long served the local and surrounding communities. It is in honor of the original
inhabitants of the area, the Lakota Sioux, that the Lodge takes its name. Keya Paha in
Lakota means "turtle hill or butte".
The territory that became Keya Paha was known in the early days for the plentiful horse
thieves, rustlers and other frontier characters that hid out in its many canyons and
draws, and along the Niobrara River. Due to "vigilante" actions and the
free use of the noose in cleaning out these desperadoes, Keya Paha soon gained the title
of "Mob County". The points of interest on more than one present day ranch
include the "hanging tree" that ended the career of one or more of these
desperadoes.
The present lodge captures the spirit of the early days and beyond. Our old/new decor
places the occupant in an old west setting with all the modern conveniences. Each of our
six rooms features a distinct decor, including Cowboy, Niobrara, Americana, Fisherman and
Wildlife. For the newly weds, of one day or fifty years, enjoy a candle lit, champagne
supper followed by a night in our Honeymoon suite.
Our restaurant features entrees ranging from that staple of the
earliest inhabitants, buffalo or bison meat, to choice sea food, with the emphasis on the
beef that is the life blood of this, the heart of cattle country.
The hunter or
fisherman/woman who resides at the Lodge can have all or part of their bag prepared for
them in our kitchen by our cooks who have been preparing wild fare since they learned to
cook.
Our small, select saloon offers the right beverage to compliment your meal or help relax
the tired body after a long day of outdoor activities.
An area in the main lobby has been set aside to display crafts unique to this area and
culture. Available for viewing and purchase are items such as hat holders made from native
willow, clocks with the distinct Turtle Butte Lodge logo, wild flower and wild life
products, as well as Native American items produced by Sioux from the Rosebud and other
area locations.
The Lodge is also home base for "Sandhill Safaris", an organization offering our guests an
opportunity to enjoy the many and varied outdoor activities unique to this country. Check
out our hunting, fishing, horse back
riding, nature hiking, photography, tubing , western living and other activities. Almost every night there is the opportunity to
watch and participate in organized calf roping and other rodeo events. A petting zoo and
playground for the enjoyment of children will soon be available.
"Mob County" and the area to the south, the magnificent, one of a kind Nebraska
Sandhills are the "playground" for these activities. The "Old West"
still lives on at many of the everyday working cattle ranches in this area. Flora and
fauna unique to the area are on display for our photography and nature hiking safaris. We
hope that you enjoy your stay with us. We value any comments that you feel can improve our
services.
